William Turpin was a follower of Universal Friend, and left money in his will to Society of Universal Friends, the sect started by the non-binary minister in 1776. Friend preached against slavery, and the community founded by the minister in western New York provided a safe haven for blacks, women, and anyone who wished to live a life of piety and fellowship, unhindered by limitations of race or gender.
